Artist profiles:

PAN SONIC - TURKU, FINLAND

Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen, members of the party organizing crew Hyperdelic Housers, created Panasonic in 1993, (the giant Panasonic firm only realized their existence in 1999, since when they are using the Pan Sonic alter ego, to avoid the courtrooms).

Their first EP was released on Sahkö Records in 1994, and in 1995 they released their first album on Blast First. Their sound was exposed a great deal in 1995, when they, together with Jimmy Cauty from the KLF, showed off a special armoured vehicle called "Audio Weapons Armoured Car System" in London's East End in a car park. This vehicle is similar to those of used by British police to control and disperse crowds on the streets.

Their rhythmical world is involving electro-break and technoid pulses, but is mostly undefinable in the midst of the melting voices and noise streams. They make their own instruments, with the help of their sound engineer, Jari Lehtinen, whose mind is rather open regarding musical instruments. "We have a big box with 12 oscillators and we modulate and crisscross them all the time. Also there is so-called typewriter, which is built on an old typewriter. We have drum modules that are powered by a 808."

Lately their live setup started to include an MPC2000 sampler as well. "Our aim is to create a physical effect, that is still worth listening to, and interesting too."

MEGO - VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Mego began life during the end of 1994. Mego likes to see itself as a platform for all kinds of infomation and communication carried via modern electronic media, whether it be a compact disc, MiniDisc, DVD, internet, video, live PA or a vinyl record release. Extreme effort is put into packaging and artwork. In 1999 Mego started its internet-only label Flasch.

Pita, aka Peter Rehberg started to experiment with electronic sounds at the beginning of the 90's, and since then he worked together with the best names in the minimal and noise world, including Pan Sonic. Label boss of Mego, he is interested in the process much rather than the result itself, as well as presenting the process live and thus creating a different, new result every time.

Hecker, aka Florian Hecker is an independent composer in the fields of computer music and digital production. His main aim is the merging of musical effects, instruments and pushing the boundaries of music formats as thus achieving new sounds, themes and experiences. He works together visually with Skot.

Mathis Gmachl and Tina Frank are the visual brigade of Mego. Video installations, and all sorts of other visuals are created for the music, with a very strong bond between the 2 media.
